4G Wireless Evolution – Looking Towards LTE-Advanced

Release 10 developed the 3GPP proposal for the International Telecommunications Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) program. This program is often referred to as “4G” although that term in not formally defined by the ITU or any other body. Due to the involvement of ITU-R in setting the requirements for Release 10, the specification process was more complicated than for previous or subsequent releases:

  • ITU-R defined the requirements for IMT-Advanced in ITU-R M [IMT-TECH] [11]
  • 3GPP defined requirements for LTE-Advanced in 36.913 [12] to meet or exceed the ITU-R requirements in [11]
  • 3GPP undertook a feasibility study 36.912 [13] that proposed LTE-Advanced as an IMT-Advanced candidate technology
  • 3GPP then created work items to develop the many detailed specification in Release 10 to define LTE-Advanced
