How to Test EV Onboard Chargers

Power Source

Environmental and stress testing for EV OBCs

Ensuring interoperability between different electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations requires testing the EV onboard chargers (OBCs) against different combinations of AC input voltages and frequency parameters from wall chargers. The impact of events related to power draw in different environmental operating conditions and under different stresses must be well understood to properly evaluate the OBC.

A reliable AC source is required to accurately control the voltage and frequency waveforms applied to the OBC under test to analyze its response. Output voltage and frequency programming and measurement are performed using a 1-phase / 3-phase AC source with DC output capability. A built-in power line disturbance function simulates AC power input conditions. To identify potential issues, a sequencer and waveform generator generates voltage and frequency transients that can occur under normal operation, emergency power operation, power transfers, or stress tests.

Testing an EV OBC against various voltage and frequency combinations is necessary to confirm interoperability between different EVs and charging stations. The Keysight AC6900 series AC power source and Keysight PathWave BenchVue AC source control software replicate real-world applications in a variety of power input conditions, including power line disturbances. It simulates power outage, surge, and sag for environmental testing and quickly generates output voltage and frequency transients for stress tests.
