The highly integrated J-BERT M8020A high-performance BERT is the ideal instrument in the Keysight SAS receiver test solution along with the Infiniium oscilloscope and the SAS receiver test automation software.

The J-BERT M8020A can be equipped with equalization and CDR to ensure proper error counting.

Receiver testing benefits from use of the M8020A J-BERT for several reasons including: Data outputs with multi-tap de-emphasis, as well as transmit equalization negotiation options that take SAS receiver testing to the next level. The J-BERT M8020A systems can participate interactively in the negotiation process, eliminating the need for proprietary methods of reading out the device under test’s coefficient update requests and reprogramming of the test instrument.
Adjustable inter symbol interference of J-BERT M8020A data outputs can be easily used to margin the tolerance of the receiver under test. Device characterization is simplified when using the J-BERT’s well calibrated jitter sources.

The DUT Control Interface option available for the M8070A BERT System Software enables the use of the devices built-in error counters, avoiding the difficulties of jitter tolerance testing associated with certain loopback versions. This applies especially to SAS-4 which asks for a PRBS 2^31 -1 as test pattern. This therefore prevents the use of a far end retimed loopback with clock compensation.

Transmitter Equalization Negotiation

To deal with long channels and different combinations of receivers and transmitters SAS-3 and SAS-4 support adaptive transmitter equalization. A receiver can train the equalization of the link partner’s transmit stage using a handshake defined in SPL-4. The TTIU training messages use BMC encoding for the coefficient update requests and for the status reporting fields.
The J-BERT M8020A high-performance BERT can participate in this handshake and adjust the BERT data output per the device under test’s (DUT) coefficient update requests.
