OS patches for the J6802A/B DNA-MX and J6805A DNA-ME

It is sometimes necessary to patch the DNA MX's [DNA ME's] Windows XPembedded operating system with security and other critical patches supplied by Microsoft or with application patches supplied by Keysight. However, since the DNA MX [DNA ME] is not a standard XP operating system, not all XP OS updates can, or should, be applied. Further, the OS updates supplied by Microsoft for the XP OS will not apply to the XPembedded OS in their standard form.

Keysight reviews Microsoft's security and critical patches for applicability to the DNA MXs [DNA ME's] XPembedded OS and packages those that are deemed necessary and places them here for access by our customers. The Microsoft XP OS update's identifier, i.e. Q823980, is used to allow the user to get details on the update from Microsoft's website.

To apply a patch:

1) Download the patch to the PC or Network Analyzer on which Keysight's NTC Console is installed

Q832662 patch (2.04 MB) - includes Q828035, 817606, Q824105

Q835732 patch (7.03 MB) - includes Q828741, Q828028, Q824146, Q823980

Note that both the NTC Console and the agent must be at version 3.1 or later to apply these patches.

2) If using NTC:
a) Start the NTC Console
b) If not already added - add the agent using NTC's Agent Manager
c) Right-click on the agent icon and select "SW Update"
Multiple agents may be selected by using left click
d) Left-click the "Patch" option button
e) Left-click the "Browse" button to find the patch that you downloaded in step 1.
f) Left-click the "Update" button to apply the patch.

OR

3) If not using NTC:
a) Open Your Web Browser and go to "http://IPADDRESS:8080/patchmgr" where IPADDRESS is the IP address or DNS name of the agent you need to patch
b) Click "Ok"in the Authentication dialog box
c) Login with the default username "NTCUser" and default password "stone" Or use the the username and password you have set for the agent, if you have changed it,
d) Left-click the "Browse" button to find the patch you downloaded in step 1.
e) Left-click the "Apply" button.

Questions and Answers

Q. On my other Windows XP systems I needed to clean the MSBlast virus off the system after the Q824146/Q823980 patch was installed. Do I need to do that to my DNA-MX/ME?
A. No. The virus was written to attach itself to the XP OS. The XP embedded OS is a subset of the XP OS. The virus is unable to install itself on the XP embedded OS as the OS has been constructed for the DNA-MX and DNA-ME.

Q. Why do I need the Q824146/Q823980 patch if the XP embedded OS, that is on DNA-MXs and DNA-MEs, does not become infected by the Mblast virus?
A. The patch offers protection against future viruses based on the same OS vulnerability. Also, while the MSBlast virus does not infect the DNA-MX/ME version of the XP Embedded OS it does attempt to. This attempt crashes the SVCHOST service, which can cause some other features to have difficulty, such as the inability to map a network drive, until the service is restarted by a reboot.

Q. How long does a patch take to install? When should the system be available for use again?
A. DNA-ME will take 4-5 minutes before it is available after starting the reboot. A DNA-MX will take about 7 minutes. If using the NTC Console to update the agent, the status of the update will be displayed as the patch is applied. The Web Browser method does not provide status.

Q. How do I know the patch applied properly?
A. The web page located at to http://IPADDRESS:8080/patchmgr, where IPADDRESS is the IP address or DNS name of the agent, displays a list of all patches applied to the agent.

Q. The patch does not apply and tells me to contact Keysight Support. Who do I contact?
