Setting up a test to troubleshoot 5G NR MIMO

Troubleshooting and debugging hardware performance issues in 5G NR multichannel multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) implementations are complicated by wide modulation bandwidths at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. Comprehensive multichannel MIMO measurements, such as error vector magnitude (EVM), are required. RF and baseband impairments such as timing errors, local oscillator (LO) phase noise, power amplifier gain / phase distortion, and intermediate frequency (IF) / RF filter group delay can contribute to transmitter EVM degradation. Gaining insight into such error mechanisms helps uncover potential MIMO performance problems.

In a 28 GHz single-user 2x2 MIMO implementation, the receiver de-multiplexes two data streams. Antenna or channel / multibounce coupling can occur and impact MIMO performance. Testing this implementation requires a microwave signal generator, cross-polarized probe antennas, and demodulation analysis software. A real-time oscilloscope enables for direct digitization of the 28 GHz test signals and provides multiple phase-coherent full-bandwidth channels to address the extreme frequency bandwidths of high-band mmWave applications.

The Keysight UXR-Series oscilloscope and Keysight PathWave VSA 5G NR modulation analysis software provide up to four phase-coherent full-bandwidth channels for testing wide bandwidth mmWave signals in MIMO implementations. A maximum instantaneous bandwidth of up to 110 GHz enables the validation of high-band mmWave applications.
