Co-Innovators Keysight and Nokia Break Network Speed Boundaries

Artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, the internet of things (IoT), and many other applications are demanding more and more bandwidth, year after year, presenting significant challenges. Recently, co-innovators Nokia and Keysight teamed up to push the boundaries of engineering and set a new data transmission speed record, paving the way for faster, better data connection networks to handle the ever-increasing amount of traffic on networks.

They succeeded in achieving a 260 GBaud ultra-high-speed optical signal transmission over 100 km of standard single-mode fiber, exceeding the previous record of 220 GBaud.

The formal test results were presented at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022 in Basel, Switzerland.

With the help of Keysight Technologies' new 256 GSa/s arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) (M8199B), R&D teams can create and test transmission systems that operate with symbol rates up to 260 GBaud and achieve net bitrates greater than 2 Tbit/s in coherent optical communications.

“Keysight is honored to work with Nokia Bell Labs on achieving 260 GBaud,” said Dr. Joachim Peerlings, vice president of Network and Data Center Solutions at Keysight. “The continued proliferation of AI requires new levels of server and network performance that must scale computing resources within reasonable energy bounds. Higher data rates and new modulation formats will be among the enabling technologies for the industry.”
