Keysight Goes to DEFCON 31

Every summer, tens of thousands of hackers, security professionals, and hobbyists from around the globe make a pilgrimage to sunny Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States for the DEFCON security conference. Known colloquially as “hacker summer camp”, the conference has something for everyone no matter the interest or specialty. And this year, Keysight will be there in force. Here are a couple of the main activities we will have going on at DEFCON this week:

Partnership with IoT Village

This year, Keysight has partnered with IoT Village in order to show off the capabilities of our IoT Security Assessment tool. We will have a booth set up in the village where you can learn more about the tool, grab some stickers, or just talk shop. More importantly, you will have the chance to see how well your own devices stand up against the IoT Security Assessment tool inside the Box of Doom. Essentially, this large, windowed faraday cage allows us to subject an IoT device to intense Bluetooth/WIFI fuzzing as well as all manner of targeted assessments in isolation. If you’re brave, you can bring a device of your own to run through our gauntlet. And if not, you can watch what happens when we run the fuzzer against a popular video doorbell. It will be fun either way, so please stop by to see us.

Conference Talk at DEFCON

In addition to our presence in IoT Village, I will also be giving a talk at DEFCON 31. The talk, entitled “Fantastic EtherTypes and Where to Find Them”, is on a subject very near and dear to me: weird network protocols. It will focus on all the strange things that can be found when you dig around in layer two of a network. We will cover several different types of environments, including Industrial/Electrical, Medical, and Transportation, as well as a surprise or two. This will be my fifth time speaking at the DEFCON conference but my first time as a member of the Keysight team, so I am very excited. The talk will be at 1:30 PDT on Friday, August 11th in Track 3. Please stop by to watch the talk or come see me at the Keysight booth afterward if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

We are very excited to have a larger presence at DEFCON this year. It is always enjoyable to be able to share what we know with the community and to learn from all of you in return. We hope that we will be able to continue growing our participation in future years as well. See you at DEFCON 31!
