What Does Popcorn Have to Do With the Data Center?

Massive data flow from emerging technologies such as 5G and IoT is driving explosive traffic growth, creating unprecedented demand for bandwidth everywhere in the network and data center. In fact, IDC predicts that the global datasphere will grow from 33 zettabytes (ZB) in 2018 to 175 ZB by 2025. One ZB of data is a billion terabytes (TB). To put that into perspective, Netflix estimates that a stream of standard definition video uses about 1 GB of data per hour and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of high-definition (HD) video.

So how many hours of HD Netflix TV shows or movies do you think you can watch with 175 ZB of data? Get your popcorn ready and download Keysight’s new ‘Ten Things You Need to Know About Data Center Innovation’ poster to find out.

Let me just tell you that it is way more TV than anyone of us can watch in our lifetimes. Even those of us who have been known to binge watch our favorite shows. For the fun of it, let’s do the math… If we assume an average lifespan of 70 years old, then here’s how many hours we can expect to live:

[70 years*365 days/year + 17 extra days (leap years)]*24 hours/day = 613,608 hours

Perhaps a more realistic question is how many hours of HD Netflix TV can each person on earth watch with 175 ZB of data? As of Feb. 2019, the world’s population is estimated at approximately 7.7 billion people. Hint: each person in the world can watch several thousands of hours of HD Netflix shows. Now that is a heck of a lot of popcorn and TV watching.

To keep up with the world’s never-ending quest for more data, the data center infrastructure must constantly evolve. And Keysight’s design and test solutions continue to evolve with it. We accelerate data center infrastructure innovations so you can focus on fast deployment of new services, such as the next Netflix.
