Rechargeable Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are extensively used in various applications, including electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and IoT devices, as well as in hybrid vehicles.
Once fully charged, NiMH batteries exhibit a gradual voltage drop rather than maintaining a constant voltage. This behaviour increases the risk of overcharging, which can lead to gradual depletion of battery capacity even after the battery is fully charged. As a result, NiMH batteries have high tendency to overcharge, especially when relying solely on stopping voltage or current as the cut-off mechanism. Proper charging of NiMH batteries is critical to maximize battery capacity and optimize battery performance in various products.
The PW9254A Keysight PathWave Advanced Power Application Suite offers an efficient platform for charging NiMH batteries. With the PW9253A PathWave Advanced Battery Test and Emulation application software, users can confidently charge NiMH batteries while minimizing the risk of overcharging. This application provides three cut-off conditions tailored for “Others” Battery Types, including NiMH batteries: Time, Negative Delta Voltage (NDV), and Temperature.
