Is Time Domain Extinction EDFA measurement personality offered for the 8614XB OSA?

Currently, Keysight offers optical amplifier gain and noise figure using the interpolated source subtraction (ISS) test method. This method offers the following advantages:

  • Very simple test apparatus; single or multichannel source and the OSA
  • Laser sources are unmodulated
  • Applicable to EDFA, SOA, and Raman* amplifiers
  • Can be used on amplifiers with enabled AGC or ALC loops

While Keysight pioneered time-domain test methods and offered single-channel channel applications for the now obsolete 71452B OSA, this capability is now only available in complete turnkey optical amplifier test solutions. While the time domain extinction test method can provide reduced noise figure uncertainty by reducing interpolation and source spontaneous emission errors, the additional complexity required for a multi-channel OSA application make it difficult to offer a user-configurable solution. Keysight may offer such solutions in the future.

*Noise figure measured with OSA-based test methods do not include noise due to double Rayleigh backscatter.
