Optical Transceiver Extinction Ratio Measurements

Application Notes

Extinction ratio is an important measurement for characterizing the performance of optical transmitters. As design/test margins get tighter, the challenges of making accurate and repeatable extinction ratio measurements become more apparent. In addition, the variability of extinction ratio measurements made with different reference receivers has become an industry concern. Recent developments in extinction ratio measurement technique can improve design margins and manufacturing yields.

This paper discusses the measurement challenges and the causes of measurement uncertainty and variability. In addition, it describes methods for reducing uncertainties caused by non-ideal performance of standard reference receivers. Techniques for achieving better measurement consistency across test systems are included.
