Why is the internal preamp required for making noise figure measurements on the ESA-E Series Spectrum Analyzer?

It is highly recommended that the optional ESA Internal Preamplifier Option 1DS be ordered because all instrument specifications below 3GHz require the ESA 3GHz Internal Preamp Option 1DS be installed. Even if you don't want to take advantage of the ESA specifications or the internal preamplifier, an external preamplifier is still advised because it can reduce the total NF measurement uncertainty substantially. This is  because the effective noise figure of the measurement system will be reduced, and thus it will reduce the sensitivity of the total NF uncertainty to the Instrument Gain Uncertainty.
