Digital Interconnect Test System Reference Solution

Configuration Guides

A.     Select M937xA PXI Vector Network Analyzer Configuration

Step 1. Start by choosing the frequency range of the M937xA PXIe Vector Network Analyzer

M9370A 300 kHz to 4 GHz

M9371A 300 kHz to 6.5 GHz

M9372A 300 kHz to 9 GHz

M9373A 300 kHz to 14 GHz

M9374A 300 kHz to 20 GHz

M9375A 300 kHz to 26.5 GHz

The frequency range will depend on the digital modulation rate being measured. For example, for a 5 Gbit/sec digital signal, a frequency range of that includes the third harmonic, or 15 GHz would be recommended.

Step 2. Determine required number or M937xA modules

The number of M937xA modules required will depend on the required number of test ports for the digital interconnect reference solution. For example, for an eight-differential lane digital interconnect device, 32-test ports (one for each end of sixteen conductors) will be required. Each M937xA PXI VNA module has two test ports, so the number of M937xA PXI VNA modules required will be ½ the number of test ports. For a 32-test port system, sixteen M937xA PXI VNA modules will be required M937xA PXI VNA modules Order the number of modules required.

The maximum number of test ports is 32, so up to sixteen M937xA PXI VNA modules can be selected.

Step 3. Add multiport measurement capability

M937xA-551 N-port calibrated measurements Only one module in the system needs to have Option 551. With one module having Option 551, the entire system operates as a multiport vector network analyzer, with complete multiport calibration capability.

Step 4. Add multiport cable kits

Order Y1242A multiport cable kits. The number of multiport cable kits to order is equal to the number of M937xA PXI VNA modules in the system minus 1. For example, if eight M937xA PXI VNA modules are in a system, order seven Y1242A multiport cable kits. For sixteen M937xA PXI VNA modules in a system, order fifteen Y1242A multiport cable kits The multiport cable kits are used to interconnect individual modules together to operate as a multiport vector network analyzer. These cables interconnect the LO, reference, and trigger signals between all modules.

Step 5. Add multiport accessory and tool kit (optional)

The Y1281A Accessory and tool kit is very useful for connecting and removing the interconnect cables between the modules in the system. The connector spacing is very tight, so these special tools are very useful. Order one Y1281A took kit per system.

Y1281A Accessory and tool kit Order one Y1281A took kit per system.

Includes the following tools for SMA and SMB connector removal:

5002-3361 Pull tool for SMB connectors

5023-1450 Custom long deep socket for 3.5/SMA connector nuts

Step 6. Add time domain capability to the M937xA PXI vector network analyzer hardware (optional)

M937xA-010 Time domain capability on the M937xA vector network analyzer

Not normally required; the PLTS software provides time domain analysis capability.

The Physical Layer Test System (PLTS) software provides time domain analysis capability, so normally the time domain capability in the hardware is redundant, and not required. If desired to have time domain on the hardware, only one module in the system needs to have Option 010. With one module having Option 010, the entire multiport vector network analyzer has time domain capability.

B.     Select a Calibration Device

For a multiport vector network analyzer, electronic calibration kits are the most practical method of calibrating a multiport system. There are many different electronic calibration (ECal) modules to choose from, depending on the frequency range, number of ports, and connector types desired. This configuration guide lists the ECal modules that are suitable for the digital interconnect reference solution. Choose the ECal module that best suits your calibration requirements. Typically, the connector types for the ECal modules will be 3.5 mm female on all ports, to mate with the 3.5 mm male test port cables. An excellent guide to calibrating a multiport measurement system with an ECal module is provided in application note, M937xA Multiport and Multi-site Test Optimization Techniques, literature number 5992-0681EN.
