Silent Installations

The InstallAnywhere program provided with SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME supports a silent installation mode. A normal (non-silent) installation receives the necessary input from the user installing the software in the form of responses to prompts in dialog boxes. However, a silent installation does not display prompts for inputs. InstallAnywhere supports a silent mode that has no user interaction, and runs either using the defaults provided for a complete install or using a response file that contains the values for various InstallAnywhere variables, which control the installation.

Silent Installation Overview

Here is an overview on how to set up and run a silent installation.

  1. If needed, run a silent uninstallation before hand to remove SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME.
  2. Run the SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.exe utility using arguments for a silent installation (see below).

Running a Silent Installation

To run a silent installation, run the SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.exe utility using the silent installation arguments shown below:

  1. On the client PC, verify that SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME installation folder does not already exist. There should not be a _C:\Program Files\ SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>_ folder since the silent installation process is not expecting it to be there. If SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME has been installed, uninstall it before you continue.
  2. On the client PC, open a Command Prompt or DOS prompt window. In a command prompt, change to the folder that where SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.exe is. The location of the SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.execan be on a server.

When a silent installation is running, you won't see any confirmation that the installer is running. However, the process monitor will show _ SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME_install.exe_ processes running in the background. If you are running on Windows 7

, then you will need administrator privileges to install.

  3. On the client PCs, perform one of the following actions to run a silent installation of SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME:
Silent installation of SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME installs the License Setup Wizard. However, if the license setup is required, the License Setup Wizard is launched on the first run of SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME.
  • Complete Silent Install
    • To perform a complete silent installation without requiring any user interaction, type the following command from the command line:
      SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.exe -i silent
  • Custom Silent Install
    • The custom silent installation gets its input from the response file installvariables.properties created during a custom installation. To perform a custom silent installation without requiring any user interaction, create a response file then type the following command from the command line specifying the path to the response file:
      SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>.exe -f c:\tmp\your_response_file.txt -i silent

Creating Your Own Response File

When a normal installation runs, the inputs to prompts that are entered manually into dialog boxes are automatically recorded to a response file. By default, all of the variables defined in your installation are recorded. A response file is always generated after the successful completion of an installation. InstallAnywhere creates this file when the installation exits, storing the values of the applicable properties in the file. This is useful for saving a record of a specific installation execution session that can later be reused in a silent or custom installation.

This response file is a plain text file that uses a simple key=value format. If you want to change the settings in a particular response file, you can edit the response file directly or create your own from scratch.

The properties in the response file looks like following:

  • INSTALLER_UI allows you to specify the installer mode in the properties file, negating the need to use the -i silent command-line switch.
  • USER_INSTALL_DIR is the location where you wish to install SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME. You must use double back slash in the path (c:\Program Files\ SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>)
  • CHOSEN_INSTALL_SET can be set to a value of either complete or custom.
If you set it to "complete", you don't need to add the CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST variable. The "complete" selection will install all of the SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME modules.
If you select "custom", you need to set the CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST.

  • CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST allows you to specify one or more items separated by commas.

Troubleshooting

The most effective way to troubleshoot errors with the silent install/uninstall process is to run the same type of installation in normal or visual mode.

Uninstall Procedure

  1. Select Start > All Program > * SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME<version>* > *Uninstall SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME <version>*
    The Uninstall dialog box appears.
  2. Select Uninstall Product and select Next to proceed and completely uninstall SHORT_PRODUCT_NAME <version> from your system.
