Can I recover the E7515A operating system if it fails to start correctly?

The E7515A operating system resides on the C: drive of the instrument, while user data and instrument ID data resides on the D: and E: drives respectively. This is a single physical hard drive that has been partitioned into multiple logical drives. If the operating system fails to start, them this may be due to:

  • Hard drive failure.
  • Virus infections.
  • Corrupt/missing system files.

Hard drive failures can present themselves in different ways. For example, the E7515A may not detect the hard drive when it is powered-on. The simplest way to verify that the hard driva has been detected is to check the BIOS summary at power-on. If you suspect the E7515A has a defective hard drive then contact your local Keysight Service Center.

Virus infections and corrupt/missing system files can be repaired via the Instrument Image Recovery procedure. This procedure completely erases the C: drive, and overwrites it with a backup image stored in a hidden partition of the hard drive. This procedure does not affect E7515A calibration data, licenses, scenario files, save/recall states, or user data that has been stored on the other drives.

NOTE:
If any user data has been saved to the C: drive, then this must be backed-up before running the Instrument Image Recovery procedure.

The Instrument Image Recovery procedure is carried out as follows:

  • Connect a USB keyboard to the E7515A.
  • Power-on the E7515A.
  • When the boot selection screen is shown, select Instrument Image Recovery.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to recover the C: drive back to its original factory state.
  • The recovery process takes approximately 30 minutes.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
During the recovery process, mains power to the E7515A must not be interrupted, and it must not be switched off using the front panel or rear panel power buttons. If mains power is interrupted, or if the E7515A is switched off, then the C: drive could become corrupted and unable to boot.

Once the recovery process is complete, the End User License Agreement will be displayed on the E7515A screen. Refer to the E7515A Getting Started Guide for further information.
