What to do when I get blue screen after powering up the 18-slot PXIe system with multiple PXI/PXIe modules and Windows XP (SP3 x86)?

A Windows XP blue screen can occur while booting with a PXIe chassis containing multiple PXI/PXIe modules in the chassis. This problem has only been seen with Windows XP (SP3 x86) controllers, and usually occurs on the very first boot after reconfiguring modules in the chassis (subsequent boots do not exhibit blue screen). The issue can be resolved by one of the three resolutions below.

  1. Use an OS other than Windows XP.
  2. Simply reboot the Windows XP PC. On rare occasions the second boot will have blue screen. Subsequent boots should be fine.
  3. Boot first with no module drivers installed, then install them after Windows XP has booted.

* NOTE: The following procedure assumes that the PXI/PXIe module software has not already been installed on the Windows XP system. If PXI/PXIe module software was previously installed, you must first un-install it.

Procedure:

  • Controller and chassis should be powered-down.
  • Install PXI/PXIe modules into chassis.
  • Connect PXIe chassis to controller (applies only to cabled connections to remote controllers).
  • Power-up chassis.
  • Boot controller (applies to remote controllers only).
  • After Windows XP boots, install each PXI/PXIe module driver sequentially as the PCI manager's "Found New Hardware Wizard" queries for them.
