Can I use multimode fiber on a single mode output and vice versa?

Apart from any loss resulting from Fresnel-reflections on the concatenation of the two fibers (which is true also for a SMF-SMF connection), an outgoing multimode fiber can be attached to a singlemode fiber output.
Vice versa basically two effects result in significant loss:
The difference in core size
The fact, that a multimode fiber carries significantly more modes than a singlemode fiber (which carries 1), which - except the basic one - could not be coupled into the SMF fiber.
