Optimizing battery run time on mobile wireless devices entails several different test methodologies that go well beyond simply validating the run time, including testing and characterizing the device, its sub circuits, and its battery, both independently and in combination. One key methodology employs capturing long term battery current drain profiles at high sample rates and over a wide dynamic range to quickly gain deeper insights on all operating modes of a device. Evaluating power savings operating modes are particularly challenging, calling for an unprecedented dynamic range of measurement, and in turn this is driving innovation in test. Coupled with this is the need to have a number of effective ways of visualizing and analyzing measurement results. Together these yield greater insights for achieving longer battery run-time.

The choice of the battery, its management system, and how the host device makes use of it impact battery run-time performance. Anticipating and accounting for their influences will assure you of achieving optimum battery run-time performance. The battery is a very non-ideal power source. It interacts with its host device, influencing its current drain. Conversely, the nature of the device’s current drain and the way its battery management system functions have dramatic impact on actual battery capacity delivered. Two different batteries with the same capacity rating can deliver very different results in actual use. Validating all these elements is necessary when optimizing battery run-time. Doing so will provide the insights to make certain you get the most out of the battery you are using.

Ed Brorein, Marketing Application Engineer, Agilent Technologies
Ed received his BSEE from Villanova University in 1979 and an MSEE from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1987. Ed joined Agilent Technologies (at the time Hewlett Packard) in 1979 and worked as an R&D engineer, manufacturing engineer, and marketing engineer in many various roles, presently as a marketing applications engineer. All along Ed has been actively and deeply involved with the design, engineering, and application of DC power products and components. One area of focus for Ed has been extensively working with mobile device developers, helping with the testing of battery life and power management systems.
