The need to reduce Energy Consumption as well as CO2 emissions is driving the growth of power electronics and power converters. Two of the main power electronics design drivers are increased power conversion efficiency and consumption analysis. Keysight has new and innovative solutions that address each stage of the power converter design cycle with test instruments in:

Topic 1: Power Device & Component Evaluation

In this stage of the design cycle engineers want to evaluate the latest power devices (MOSFETs and IGBTs) to use in the next generation of their power electronics designs to ensure they can deliver a competitive design that can win in the market. With the emergence of wide band gap (WBG) devices like Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) the task of power device evaluation has become much more challenging. The new technologies offer capabilities that lead to benefits such as increased efficiency and smaller form factors for designs. But these same benefits make evaluating them and integrating them into future designs more challenging as we will discuss.

Topic 2: Design Software Simulation

Insights on how EDA tools can help reducing EMI issues in Power Conversion design.

Power electronics designs and switching converters in particular are moving to higher frequencies. This has a direct impact on layout parasitics creating ringing effects. To overcome these challenges designers needs to simulate circuits with parasitic layout effects.
This can easily be addressed with Keysight ADS integrating an EM field solver (to extract the parasitic from the layout artwork) with the circuit simulator. With these tools, Power Electronics designers can anticipate the real performance of their circuits including EMC/EMI. Areas covered will include Controller modeling options, Ripple and noise analysis – emphasis on HB (Harmonic Balance) and Gate driver modeling and design.
