How can the memory in a 437B Power Meter be erased for security purposes?

The following sequence of keypresses can be used to erase any information contained in the storage registers of the 437B Power Meter.

Step 1: Erase Sensor Data Tables

  • Press [SHIFT], [SPECIAL], set 1 (Access sensor data tables)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 0, [ENTER], set DEFAULT, [ENTER] (Reset table 0 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase data in table 0)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 1, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 1 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 1 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 2, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 2 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 2 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 3, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 3 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 3 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 4, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 4 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 4 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 5, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 5 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 5 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 6, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 6 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 6 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 7, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 7 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 7 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 8, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 8 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 8 data)
  • Press [ENTER], Set 9, [ENTER], set 0000000, [ENTER] (Erase table 9 name)
  • Set Y, [ENTER], [ENTER], [ENTER] (Erase table 9 data)

Step 2: Erase Upper & Lower Power Limits

  • Press [SHIFT], [SPECIAL], set 2, [ENTER], [ENTER] (Access limit settings)
  • Set 000.000dB, [ENTER] (Reset LO limit)
  • Set 000.000dB, [ENTER] (Reset HI limit)

Step 3: Erase Manual Filter Settings

  • Press [SHIFT], [SPECIAL], set 3, [ENTER] (Access filter settings)
  • Select MANL FLT, [ENTER], set 128. [ENTER] (Reset manual filter)

Step 4: Erase Register 0 (Auto-stored Previous Configuration)

  • Press [FREQ], set 0.10GHZ, [ENTER]
  • Press [FREQ], set 0.05GHZ, [ENTER]

Step 5: Erase Registers 1 To 19 (User Configurations)

  • Press [PRESET], [ENTER]
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 01 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 02 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 03 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 04 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 05 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 06 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 07 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 08 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 09 is auto-selected)
  • Press [SHIFT], [STORE], [ENTER] (Register 10 is auto-selected)


Alternatively, the following remote command sequence can be used to perform the same task.

  • CT0EN (Clear sensor data table 0)
  • CT1EN (Clear sensor data table 1)
  • CT2EN (Clear sensor data table 2)

  • FR50MZEN (Set FREQ to 50MHz)
  • PR (PRESET the instrument to it's default configuration)
  • ST1EN (Store the current configuration in register 1)
  • ST2EN (Store the current configuration in register 2)
  • ST3EN (Store the current configuration in register 3)
  • ST4EN (Store the current configuration in register 4)
  • ST5EN (Store the current configuration in register 5)
  • ST6EN (Store the current configuration in register 6)
  • ST7EN (Store the current configuration in register 7)
  • ST8EN (Store the current configuration in register 8)
  • ST9EN (Store the current configuration in register 9)
  • ST10EN (Store the current configuration in register 10)

Note that these procedures do not require a sensor to be connected to the instrument. However, if a sensor is not connected, a 'NO SENSOR' message will be displayed - this can be ignored, as the instrument will still act on the applied keypresses or commands.
