USB 3.1 is an update of the well-established, widespread standard driven by USB Implementers Forum, Inc., a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification. USB 3.1 is also known as SuperSpeedPlus USB and USB 3.0 as SuperSpeed.
Keysight offers USB 3.0 / 3.1 test solutions for transmitter and receiver test, comprised of an Infiniium oscilloscope and an error checker and pattern generator based on the J-BERT high-performance BERT Family, and the N5990A test automation software platform. USB receiver jitter tolerance testing became mandatory with the release of the USB 3.0 specification.
Accurate & repeatable receiver characterization
The J-BERT pattern generators allow link training sequences to bring the host or device into loopback mode. J-BERTs can create stress conditions even beyond margins without external sources. It has built-in, calibrated sources for sinusoidal jitter (SJ) and random jitter (RJ) as well as Spread Spectrum Clocking. Adjustable de-emphasis is available on the J-BERT M8020A output stages. The J-BERT N4903B can be extended with the N4916B De-emphasis Signal Converter or both of its data outputs can be combined to provide de-emphasized signals.
Simplified receiver test setup with less boxes and special pattern application modes
To analyze retimed and coded data from USB 3.x devices J-BERTs are equipped with built-in CDR and offer the SER analysis option which filters SKPs and SKP OS. For USB 3.0 8b/10b coded data signals J-BERT analyzers perform symbol error counting but also provide additional counters for disparity error, SKP symbosl as well as illegal symbols for debug purposes.
For USB 3.1 128b/132b coded data signals the J-BERT M8020A offers next to error counters a very useful modified SKP OS counter. Unlike most common BERT systems the J-BERT M8020A performs scrambling and de-scrambling in hardware and offers special pattern modes for 8b/10b (USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 gen1, PCIe 2.5GT/s, SATA 1.5G, 3G and 6G, SAS 1.5G, 3G, 6G and 12G), 128b/130b (PCIe 8GT/s and 16GT/s) and 128b/132b (USB 3.1 gen2) with a granularity fitting the target application. This simplifies pattern sequence and pattern setup greatly.
